After changing my BMW R1200 RT to the R1200 GS I wanted to go forth with my plan to go on a trip to the Stelvio. After searching the internet I stumbled on a site motoerit where they had a trip of 7 and 9 days in the Austrian Alps. I looked at the description of the routes and the travel dates did not fit me so i tried to make these myself. I like this as a hobby to do some exploring online and create routes.
After a few weeks I got the routes together and booked a stay in the Kaunertall region for a fair price a night. I am going solo this time. I will post information about my stay here, after my stay.
I will start on Sunday and drive to the region of Mannheim. That will be 540 km approximately. The next day I will drive to Austria around 400 km. These last kilo meters are not on highways so I guess these take more time to drive. The weather in 2023 has not the best outlook after the recent flooding in Italy if you look at the Levigno and Bormio region between June 18 and June 26
The best way to check if the roads in the Alps are open is to check the website https://www.alpenpaesse.de/alle-ziele/ and look for the roads you want to ride. Some open until the middle of June.
I have 5 days planned for routes approximately 300+ kilometers. All the routes have short-cuts so 50% could be skipped if time is running short. While I am riding solo, I have all the time available.
Day 1/5
This is the Stelvio Pass day. I will drive to Nauders and pass the border after Nauders into Italy. But before Nauders there is a place called Festung Nauders and has also a Panzer museum. I will try that out. Then i will pass the Lago di Resia (Reschensee). This is also a pass, but that will be for an other day. It is possible to pass the lake on the other side, but it seems to be under constant construction. At Prad am Stilfserjoch we go right towards Sölden. The first stop for coffee at Restaurant Gallia, which is recommended to me. After the coffee I start riding the Stelvio. After the visit on top, I continue to Livigno. We are then approximatly 3 hours underway.
In Livigno i stop for an other cup of coffee and maybe some lunch. Then we continue to the Bernina Pass. The next pass is the Albula Pass. Then we make a turn North to the Flüela pass and after that i head to my stay. They offered to park the bike in the garage so that is very nice.
Day 2/5
On this day i will pass the Reschensee and its pass (or passo di ressia) for the second time. Now i will stop at the lake and look at the church in the lake. At the end of this pass i turn south and drive throught the dolomite mountains to Sölden. Here we will ride the Timmelsjoch or Passo del Rombo and visit the motor museam. This museum burned down in 2021, but is open for public. This is a Toll road. From there on i ride to the Ötztaler Gletscherstraße. This is dead-end road, so i will ride the pass from both views. That should me amazing. I have contacted the regional tourist information about the conflicting opening hours. Then it is time to head back to the Kaunertall.
Costs: 16 euro for the timmelsjoch; 12,50 euro for the Otztaler Gletscherstrasse.
