Day 4 – Route 55 Galdhøpiggen Mountains

We packed our tent and headed out on our way to Dombas. We took the E16 from Voss and had amazing views and drove through the Lærdalstunnelen at 22 degrees and after some hours at 4 degrees at 2000 meters through the snow.

The Lærdalstunnelen tunnel is 23 km’s long and is the longest road tunnel in the world. The temperature inside the tunnel was 22 celcius and we stopped to take some pictures.

After the tunnel we turned to the Fv 5 in Tønjum heading north west. We crossed the Ferry at Fodness to Mannheller and set for Route 55, which is promised to be the most scenic route in the South of Norwaty. We were in for a treat. We passed beautifull waterfalls and rivers. Each corner was even more beautifull that the last one. Slowly we began to clime upwards into the mountains and we saw some snow.

High up in the Galdhøpiggen Mountains the snow was 2 meters high (6 a 7 feet) and we drove through the snow at 4 degrees Celcius. What a trip this is going to be! unfortunatly the video footage was taken at speed, so not very clear. The memory is although set in our minds.

The road downwards was warming us up and when we arrived below in the valley, we came to a very busy town called Lom. It seemed a skiresort in peak season. We enjoyed the traffic and people with some snacks and drinks. After a break we took of for the last stretch on the Fv15 towards the E6 and Dombas.

A few miles before Dombas we found the Faksfall Camping and Cabins with the NorCamp App. We would like to try a small cabin. And small it was, almost 4 square meters.

We met here a German man who was also on a trip in Norway. He was on his way back from Kristiansund because the weather outlook was very bad. He saw a pressure front building up and therefore cancelled his trip to the North Cape because of that. That foresight did not sound promissing for us. We kept our spirits up with some spirits that the German brought with him.

we fell a sleep not thinking about any pressure fronts for us. We promised ourselve to bring the beautifull weather with us to the North Cape. This is our holiday!
